Chiropractic care (or chiropractic treatment) is a form of manual, hands-on, drug free treatment that helps your body restore joint mobility, release muscle tension, and improve overall well-being.
Chiropractors are experts in the spine, muscle, joint and nervous system. That means unlike common belief, a chiropractor doesn't just deal with the back and spine, but can manipulate most joints, treating conditions anywhere in the body that affect the nervous system and musculoskeletal system.

Yes, chiropractors are health professionals that are experts in dealing with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the skeletal, muscle, and nervous system.
An adjustment (or manipulation) is a quick, small thrust to a joint of the body with the intention of providing pain relief and improved mobility. Moreover, chiropractic adjustments are only performed after a thorough health history and physical assessment have been conducted.
To clarify, chiropractors don't ever "crack" anything, they adjust, using low-force movements to release joint tension.
The "cracking/popping" sound you hear is a release of air from the joint space as the joints move ever so slightly from the adjustment. Under normal circumstances, there is no pain and should feel an immediate release of joint pressure/relief from stiffness!
