Acupuncture
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that involves inserting very thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body — called acupoints — along pathways known as meridians. From a modern clinical perspective, these points correspond to areas where stimulation influences the nervous system, muscles, and connective tissue to promote healing and regulate the body’s functions.
It’s one of the oldest practiced medical systems in the world, now backed by a growing body of Western research.

Please reach us at info@axonchiropractic.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question in the FAQ below.
Will insurance cover my acupuncture treatments?
At Axon Chiropractic and Rehab, acupuncture treatment is performed by a licensed, registered acupuncturist (R.Ac.). Therefore, your acupuncture treatment will be covered by insurance plans under acupuncturist services.
How do I book an appointment?
To book an appointment, we recommend doing so via our online booking system as you will have access to our practitioner’s schedule in real-time and confirm a booking right away. However, feel free to give us a call at 416 901 2966 or email us at info@axonchiropractic.ca as well.
For first-time appointments at Axon Chiropractic and Rehab, please ensure to book an “Initial Acupuncture Assessment and Treatment“.
What should I expect at my initial acupuncture assessment and treatment?
Your first visit begins with a thorough assessment of your health history, symptoms, and goals. Your acupuncturist will then develop a personalized treatment plan and walk you through what to expect before your first needles are placed.
During treatment, ultra-fine sterile needles are inserted at precise acupoints — most patients describe the sensation as a mild tingling, warmth, or a deep, relaxing heaviness.
Do I need a referral to see an acupuncturist in North York?
No referral is required. You can book an acupuncture appointment directly without seeing a physician first.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most patients experience little to no pain. The needles used are extremely thin, and sensations are usually mild — such as a light pressure or brief tingling. Many people feel relaxed during and after treatment. If at any point you’re uncomfortable, your acupuncturist will adjust the treatment immediately.
How many acupuncture sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your condition, how long symptoms have been present, and your response to treatment. Some notice improvement within a few visits, while ongoing or chronic concerns may require a structured treatment plan. At your first visit, our Registered Acupuncturist will assess your situation and give you a realistic sense of what to expect.
Can I combine acupuncture with chiropractic or massage at Axon?
Absolutely — and this is one of the biggest advantages of coming to Axon Chiropractic and Rehab. Our practitioners collaborate directly so your treatments work together, not in isolation. A common combination for patients with chronic back pain, for example, is chiropractic to correct structural alignment, massage to release surrounding muscle tension, and acupuncture to calm the nerve sensitivity driving ongoing pain.
How is acupuncture treatment different from chiropractic treatments?
Chiropractic care works from the outside in — correcting structure so your nervous system functions better. Acupuncture works from the inside out — using the nervous system itself to reduce pain signals and restore balance.
How is acupuncture treament different from registered massage treatments?
Massage therapy targets the muscles directly — releasing tension and improving circulation. Acupuncture targets the body’s control system — the nervous system — to address deeper or more complex patterns that massage alone can’t reach.
